IUNC Conference Moscow features Dr. Rahul Choudaha as a keynote speaker on international student trends

The 6th Annual International Universities Networking Conference - IUNC Eurasia 2017 will take place from May 15-18, 2017 in Moscow, Russia. The conference attracts about 250 international higher education professionals from around the world with the goals of learning more about the opportunities of building partnerships for recruitment, research, and exchanges with universities from Russia & CIS. This year IUNC is also hosting a BRICS HigherEd Cooperation Forum that provides a platform for developing university partnerships among institutions from BRICS countries.

With 10,000 members NAFSA: Association of International Educators is the world's largest nonprofit association dedicated to international education and exchange. NAFSA annual conference typically attracts over 8,000 professionals. [This year's conference will take place in Denver, CO from May 29 to June 3. I'm especially looking forward to it as I earned my PhD from University of Denver.]

Managing an association of this size and scope requires strong strategic planning and implementation in collaboration with members and association staff. NAFSA achieves this very effectively through its staff, board and volunteer leaders.

A large number of NAFSA members volunteer each year to help create and disseminate knowledge, influence public policy, and maintain a strong organization. How to raise resources for campus internationalization strategies?

One of the recent publication from NAFSA: Association of International Educators--Developing Sustainable Resources for Internationalization--aims at providing strategies to acquire resources needed for advancing comprehensive campus internationalization efforts. The publication is very timely as there is an increasing interest among institutions to expand internationalization, but few are investing and committing the resources to the proportional level. The authors, Dr. John K. Hudzik and Dr. Penelope J. Pynes translate their extensive experiences in leading campus internationalization by providing a practical approach of engaging campus stakeholders and acquiring resources. They advise that developing sustainable resources for internationalization can be pursed through two primary channels. First by connecting internationalization to existing resources and second, by seeking new money.

Pearson--lessons in strategy and change from a global education company

A recent story in the Fortune magazine traces the transformation of Pearson from a traditional publishing house to a global education company poised for an digital learning era. The attention-grabbing headline "Everybody hates Pearson" leads the reader into an insightful story of opportunities and challenges faced by Pearson in the pursuit of its strategic choice of focusing on "data-driven education." Here is a timeline of the major milestones in Pearson's history.   Pearson in its recently released annual report notes that "Pearson’s strategy centres on a significant and exciting long-term opportunity: the sustained and growing global demand for greater access, achievement and affordability in education." It adds that "Pearson stands at the intersection of new technology (with its ability to engage, personalise, diagnose and scale) and new, more effective, ways of teaching." Impact assesst as an integral part of internationalization strategy

In a world of increasing fiscal constraints, discourses that emphasize measuring impact continue to gain traction.
Most recently, the Scaling Social Impact series by Harvard Business Review and The Bridgespan Group focuses on how organisations can have a greater social impact. In the same vein, the Stanford Social Innovation Review also has a special section on innovative ways to measure an organisation’s impact on various populations. 
In light of the increasing complexity and changes in higher education, universities engaging in internationalisation need to candidly ask themselves if and how their strategies are in fact meeting the goals and outcomes they have set for themselves. 
Of course, assessment is not something new for many engaged with the internationalisation of higher education. However, current practices often take a one-dimensional, limited view as compared to a big-picture, holistic view of the impact of internationalisation strategies.

Internationalisation of Higher Education and Global Mobility is a recent book which brings together perspectives and reflections of several experts in international higher education.
The book is edited by Bernhard Streitwieser, PhD Assistant Professor of International Education The George Washington University Washington, DC.

How to maximize impact of internationalization strategies?

Why internationalization strategies of universities often deliver sub-optimal results? Why international efforts in many institutions struggle to get adequate resources? Why some institutions go through mission-creep and get distracted about their purpose and approaches of going global?
These are some of the question answered in our recent piece entitled "Higher Education Internationalization – What gets measured, gets funded" published in University World News by me and Eduardo Contreras Jr of Harvard Graduate School of Education.
We argue that despite growing interest in internationalization, institutions have not maximized its potential due to lack of attention to two extremes of the internationalization process.

Diverse global engagement strategies: from branch campuses to online degrees

International branch campuses receive a lot of attention, however, they form a small proportion university internationalization strategies. More recently, online learning is showing promising potential for global engagement.
A recent report shows that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT, is shaping its internationalisation future around its prior initiative like OpenCourseWare and now edX. It forecasts a future where education will be unbundled and degrees will be disaggregated "into smaller credential units such as course credentials, sequence credentials, and even badges" with the possibility that "the credentialing entity may be different from the institution that offers the course". The report adds that the "digital education revolution has the potential to alter the way MIT interacts not only with its on-campus students, but with an entire globe of learners".

Looking back at international higher eduction in 2013: The year of funding constraints, regulatory pressures and learning innovations

At the beginning of 2013, I projected that the three mega-trends influencing global higher education will be related to university budgets/funding, regulatory environment and technological innovations. I concluded that 2013 will be a year in which the higher education sector, will be under increasing pressure to justify its value, not only from financial and regulatory side pressures but due to emergence of competing technology-enabled learning models like MOOCs.

By the end of 2013, there have been several developments aligning with the  mega-trends forecast. Here are some of the key stories from 2013.

- Funding and university budgets: Given that higher education is tightly coupled with the economy, a sense of recovery is also reflecting a slight turnaround in university budgets in the US. In ”The Disposable Academic”, The Economist argued that "doing a PhD” was often a waste of time. What Blackberry can teach foreign branch campuses about MOOCs?

Here is the excerpt from my article published in University World News.

In 2007, BlackBerry was at the forefront of the smartphones industry with over 40% of the market share in the United States. However, the iPhone offered a new choice to consumers and redefined their expectations of a smartphone.

Now Blackberry is arguably on its deathbed, with its market share slipping to less than 4% in the US. The Wall Street Journal notes that “it was a blinding confidence in the basic BlackBerry product that was at the root of RIM's [parent company of Blackberry] current troubles”.

In the same vein, MOOCs are beginning to offer a new choice to students, and are not only changing the financial equation of foreign branch campuses but also the way education is delivered as a result of technological advances.

Could the birth of MOOCs lead to death of international branch campuses?

Could MOOCs change higher education the way emails changed postal services? I believe so. In nearly two decades, emails have changed the economic structure of postal services. An article in the New York Times in 2005 argued Why the Internet Isn't the Death of the Post Office. Seven years, later, US Postal Services is in deep trouble and it is projecting a loss of $15 billion this year. Does that mean that postal services will vanish. No--postal services will co-exist with emails. Postal services have to redefine the cost-structures, including human resources which account for 80% of cost, to remain viable in this world of instant and free communication.

Likewise, MOOCS are challenging traditional higher education to redefine its cost structure. Of course, they pose no threat to to top quartile of competitive institutions which provide access to higher socioeconomic advancement, but the next tier of institutions will face a new world of fast-paced, technology-based competition, wh…

Could MOOCs revolutionize international student recruitment and transnational education?

MOOCs--Massive Open and Online Courses, have been in news for their potential to be "revolutionary" in learning space. Tom Friedman says that "Big breakthroughs happen when what is suddenly possible meets what is desperately necessary."

With innovative, adaptive, high-quality learning opportunity offered at a low-cost, perhaps, MOOCs are at the cusp of making a big breakthrough. It is not only going to increase competitive pressure on for-profit online education sector but also traditional not-for-profit universities and colleges. Both of them have to justify their cost-structures and value of credential in times of increasing competition and decreasing resources.

In the world of international higher education, I believe that MOOCs offer two unintentional influences:
